Ghostship on Mac: how to play Super Mario 64

Ghostship runs on a Mac. It is a native PC port of Super Mario 64 from the team behind Ship of Harkinian, made by HarbourMasters. The current release, 3.0.0 (September 7, 2026), ships a Mac build (universal, runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel). You supply your own copy of the game; Ghostship supplies everything else.

How to install Ghostship on a Mac

  1. Download the Mac zip from the releases page and extract everything into one folder.
  2. Open Ghostship.dmg and move Ghostship.app into Applications.
  3. Get past Gatekeeper. macOS blocks it the first time because the project is not signed by Apple. Control-click the app and choose Open. On macOS 13 or later, if that offers no Open button, go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway (it appears for about an hour after the first attempt).

Ghostship on its official page: download only from there. Sites offering a version with the game already inside are pirated, and often carry malware.

The game file you need

Your own copy of Super Mario 64, US or Japanese, as a .z64 file. Convert an .n64 file to .z64 first; the project checks the file before using it.

Run Ghostship and select your file. It builds its own data file (sm64.o2r) and starts.

What you get

  • Higher frame rates through interpolation, and a 16:9 widescreen option
  • HD textures and post-processing shaders
  • A mod API and achievements
  • Metal renderer by default on Mac

Saves and settings live in ~/Library/Application Support/com.ghostship.
