Zelda64Recomp on Mac: how to play Majora's Mask

Zelda64Recomp runs on a Mac. It is a static recompilation of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask: a tool translated the original N64 program into a native app, with the RT64 renderer on top, made by the N64: Recompiled team. The current release, 1.2.2 (August 27, 2025), ships a Mac build (universal, runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel). You supply your own copy of the game; Zelda64Recomp supplies everything else.

How to install Zelda64Recomp on a Mac

  1. Download the macOS zip from the releases page. Unzip it, then unzip the Zelda64Recompiled.zip inside it.
  2. Move Zelda64Recompiled.app into Applications.
  3. Get past Gatekeeper. macOS blocks it the first time because the project is not signed by Apple. Control-click the app and choose Open. On macOS 13 or later, if that offers no Open button, go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway (it appears for about an hour after the first attempt).

Zelda64Recomp on its official page: download only from there. Sites offering a version with the game already inside are pirated, and often carry malware.

The game file you need

Your own copy of Majora's Mask: only the US N64 version. Other N64 file formats are converted to .z64 for you; a different region gets "This project requires the NTSC-U N64 version of the game."

Click Select ROM in the launcher menu and pick your file. The project checks it and the game starts.

What you get

  • Any frame rate, widescreen and ultrawide
  • Mods and texture packs from Thunderstore (drag them onto the window or use Install Mods)
  • A randomizer mod
  • Gyro aiming, a dual-analog camera and autosave

Saves and settings live in ~/Library/Application Support/Zelda64Recompiled/saves.

Known Mac issues

  • Open reports of crashes at launch or on exit on some Macs
  • A crash when a DualSense controller disconnects

From the project's open issues on October 15, 2026; check its issue tracker for fixes.
