GameToMac, explained
GameToMac is a free Mac app that sets up 19 specific Windows games to run on Apple Silicon Macs, from Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption 2 to Diablo IV and Age of Empires. You use your own Steam or Battle.net copy; the app does the compatibility work that CrossOver or Whisky would make you do by hand. It launched in September 2026, needs macOS 26 or later, and does not support Intel Macs.
Where we stand: everything on this page is what GameToMac says about itself, re-read from its site on October 1, 2026. We have not tested any of its games ourselves yet. We list a game as playable only when two independent sources agree, so GameToMac does not change any game's label on this site until someone confirms it. If you have tried it, the "Report an issue" button on any game page reaches us.
Which games GameToMac supports
"Our label today" is how we list the game without GameToMac. For Company of Heroes 3, Diablo II: Resurrected and Heroes of Might and Magic III, we list no other Mac route, so GameToMac is the only option on this site.
| Game | Our label today | What GameToMac supports | macOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition | Native Mac version | The Windows version, so you can play online against Windows players (the official Mac version only matches you with other Macs) | 26+ |
| Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition | CrossOver | Campaigns, skirmishes and multiplayer | 26+ |
| Age of Empires IV | CrossOver | Single-player, and online matches with Windows players | 26+ |
| Age of Mythology: Retold | CrossOver | Single-player and multiplayer | 26+ |
| Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour | CrossOver | Single-player, plus online play through the community GeneralsOnline service | 26+ |

| Diablo II: Resurrected | No confirmed route yet | The Battle.net PC edition. Needs a Battle.net account (Battle.net) | 26.5+ |
| Diablo IV | CrossOver | Online play. Needs a Battle.net account (Steam or Battle.net) | 26.5+ |
| Elden Ring | CrossOver | Offline single-player only; online play is unavailable | 26+ |

How it works
- Install the app. Download GameToMac from gametomac.com, move it to Applications and open it.
- Pick a game and sign in. Choose a game and GameToMac opens Steam (or Battle.net, for the Blizzard games) in its own window. Sign in with your usual account and install the game you own.
- Press Play. GameToMac launches the game with its fixes applied. Later updates to the game come through Steam or Battle.net; updates to the fixes come through the app.
It does not say what is under the hood, but needing Rosetta means it translates the Windows game's Intel code, the same way CrossOver and Whisky do. The difference is that someone has already done the tuning for each game on the list.
GameToMac vs CrossOver, Whisky and Parallels
| Route | Games | Cost | Setup | Macs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GameToMac | 19, each tuned by the developer | Free | Pick a game, press Play | Apple Silicon, macOS 26+ |
| CrossOver | Thousands, quality varies by game | Paid, free trial | Bottles, sometimes tweaks | Apple Silicon and Intel |
| Whisky | Many, no longer maintained | Free | Bottles, manual tweaks | Apple Silicon |
| Parallels | Anything that runs on Windows for Arm | Paid subscription | Install all of Windows | Apple Silicon and Intel |
The short version: if your game is on GameToMac's list and your Mac runs macOS 26, try GameToMac first, because it costs nothing and skips the setup. For everything else, CrossOver is still the answer.
The catches
- It is new. GameToMac is a September 2026 launch from an independent developer, not a company with a track record. Apps like this can stall: Whisky, the last popular free option, stopped being developed.
- Game updates can break it. GameToMac says so itself: when a game patches, its fix may need an app update before it works again.
- Anti-cheat still wins. Online modes behind anti-cheat that has no Mac support stay blocked. That is why Elden Ring is offline only, and why Red Dead Online is not part of it.
- Recent macOS only. It needs macOS 26, and Diablo II: Resurrected, Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy and Path of Exile 2 need 26.5. No Intel Macs.
What would change our labels
A game moves to "playable" here when a second source confirms GameToMac's claim: our own test, or a hands-on review or video showing that game running through it. When that happens, the game's page says so and names the source. We re-read GameToMac's list regularly, so games it adds or drops show up here too.
Common questions
What is GameToMac?
GameToMac is a free Mac app, launched in September 2026, that sets up a fixed list of Windows games (19 so far) to run on Apple Silicon Macs. You sign in with your own Steam or Battle.net account, pick a game, and the app applies that game's compatibility fixes and launches it for you.
Is GameToMac free?
Yes, as of launch. Its site publishes no pricing at all, so there is no word yet on whether that changes. You still need to own each game, except the free-to-play ones.
Does GameToMac work on Intel Macs?
No. It needs an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) running macOS 26 or later, and 4 of its games need macOS 26.5. Intel Macs are not supported at all.
Is GameToMac better than CrossOver?
For the games it covers, it is simpler and free: no bottles to configure and no per-game tweaks. CrossOver runs far more games and is a mature, paid product from the company that maintains Wine. If your game is on GameToMac's list, try it first; for anything else, CrossOver is still the route.
Can I play online with GameToMac?
Sometimes. GameToMac says online play works in Age of Empires IV, Company of Heroes 3, Overwatch, Counter-Strike 2 and Diablo IV, and through community services for Red Alert 2 and Generals Zero Hour. Elden Ring is offline only, because its anti-cheat does not run on a Mac.
Is GameToMac safe?
We have not audited it. It is a free app from an independent developer, downloaded from its own site rather than the Mac App Store. Download it only from gametomac.com, and let macOS check it when you open it. It uses your own Steam or Battle.net sign-in inside a store window, not a separate GameToMac account.
