OpenEmu on Mac: how to set it up
OpenEmu runs on a Mac. It emulates many consoles in one app. The Mac-only favourite with a game-library look. Its latest release (2.4.1, December 2023) is Intel-only, so it runs through Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon, and updates have slowed.

How to install OpenEmu on a Mac
- Download it from the official source. Get the Mac version from OpenEmu's own site or its official repository. Sites that bundle an emulator with games or BIOS files are distributing pirated files, and often malware.
- Move it to Applications. Open the .dmg or .zip and drag OpenEmu into your Applications folder.
- Get past macOS's warning. If macOS says the app can't be opened because Apple can't check it, Control-click it in Applications and choose Open. On macOS 13 or later, if there is no Open button, go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway (it appears for about an hour after the first try).
- Install Rosetta 2 if asked. On an Apple Silicon Mac, macOS offers to install Rosetta 2 the first time you open an Intel app. Click Install; it's a one-time step.
- Add the files it needs. Your own game dumps; some systems (PS1, Sega CD, Saturn and others) need BIOS files from your own hardware.
- Add your games and play. Point OpenEmu at the folder with your game dumps, pick a game and start it. Set up your controller in OpenEmu's settings.

Common questions
Does OpenEmu work on a Mac?
Yes. OpenEmu 2.4.1 has an official Mac version. Intel-only: Apple Silicon Macs run it through Rosetta 2. It needs macOS 10.14.4 or later.
Does OpenEmu run natively on Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4)?
Not natively. The Mac build is Intel-only, so Apple Silicon Macs run it through Rosetta 2, which macOS offers to install the first time you open it. Rosetta translates it as it runs, which costs some speed.
What do I need to play games in OpenEmu?
Your own game dumps; some systems (PS1, Sega CD, Saturn and others) need BIOS files from your own hardware.
Is OpenEmu legal?
OpenEmu itself is a legal, open-source emulator. The BIOS files, firmware and games it runs are copyrighted, so dump them from a console and games you own. Downloading them from the internet is piracy in most countries.
Why won't OpenEmu open on my Mac?
If macOS says the app can't be opened because Apple can't check it, Control-click it in Applications and choose Open. On macOS 13 or later, if there is no Open button, go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway (it appears for about an hour after the first try).
